I note that Oxford City Council’s plans for redevelopment of the Diamond Place car park, to be unveiled next month (Community News, North Oxford, Summertown & Jericho, October 7) is to be “retail-led”.
I find this rather ironic when the removal of this large and heavily-used car park seems guaranteed to largely destroy Summertown as the attractive shopping centre it is now. No doubt the council fondly imagines that all those who use the car park to shop in Summertown will travel by bus instead. In many cases, including my own, there is no direct bus to Summertown. Having travelled first to the city centre, it will obviously make more sense to shop there than to catch a second bus to Summertown.
And has anybody else noticed that building over the Diamond Place car park will enable the council to get rid of yet another set of public toilets?
