I AM writing concerning the letters that appeared on Friday, September 12. The letters show good and bad in the Oxford Mail and our community.

Elise Benjamin may be a professional politician but she speaks for all of us when she says “groups like this one will continue to take drastic action to protect their homes”.

Meanwhile, Bob Rivers appears to misunderstand Jonathan Saunders’ last letter and twists history to suit his (narrow) outlook.

“I was appalled” by Terry Roper’s reaction to democracy in action. We would be making asses of ourselves if we thought we had to be “authorised” to express our views in public.

Not even George Galloway is “misguided” enough to expose Nato’s evil and support the so-called Islamic State.

Another non-labour councillor expresses our disgust with blatant electoralism and to paraphrase one of your best correspondents, elections are becoming more of a travesty and our version of democracy is much more of an affront.

Like our NHS it’s something we need to actively defend. Alex Hollingsworth is in a very difficult position but we could do more than call for another election which would be little more than another nail in the coffin of real democracy.

If we spent more time and energy on fighting for what we actually believe in rather than merely reacting to anti-democratic attacks surely the world would be a better place.
