Apart from a one-sentence letter, ‘Cameron threatens Putin but not a word on Netanyahu’ (29 July), there have been no letters published or comments made in the Oxford Mail about Gaza where 1,865 people or one per cent of the Arab population was slaughtered in less than four weeks.

To put that into context: if the same percentage had been killed in the USA, the death toll would have been more than three million. Or if the 700,000 British soldiers killed in World War One are quantified in percentage terms, it represents a death toll of 1.5 per cent but spread over more than four years.

It is surprising, if not shocking, that this carnage has aroused so little comment. The lack of comment rather detracts from the saturation coverage of local soldiers killed in World War One. We may be moved by the tragic stories of young men taken in their prime a century ago but this smacks of hypocrisy, if not racism and a heads-in -the-sand mentality, when we apparently care so little about the victims in Gaza – including more than 400 children – of a conflict which could one day be the touch paper for another world war.
