There is a constant debate about what to do with Oxford city centre traffic, with recent letters to the Oxford Mail concentrating on buses and bicycles.
One major concern is pollution. Various methods have been used to bring about a reduction, like moving traffic out of the city centre but, whenever you do that it invariably moves that pollution to other streets, like St Aldate’s, High Street and Beaumont Street. Of late, ideas like trams have been put forward, but, at the moment, they look like pie in the sky. Would it not be possible to use a fleet of small electric buses, which are friendly enough to use city centre streets, to ferry people out of the city centre to pick up points where pollution is likely to be less, such as Queens Lane, St Giles, the proposed transport hub at the station or, perhaps, replace the present Park and Ride busses.
If such a scheme was used it might require covers at the pickup points, to protect those making the transfer, and automatic charging points for the buses.
