It won’t do any good to tinker with this scheme

The West Way Shopping Centre

First published in Letters

EVENTUALLY Doric submitted its proposal for the redevelopment of the West Way Shopping Centre at Botley in December 2013.

There followed a period for comment by concerned bodies and the public. As everybody knows the reaction was overwhelmingly against the scheme, not just in detail but of the whole concept.

This was not nimbyism – people could see that the scheme was completely wrong for the neighbourhood in just about every way possible.

Since then we have had delay after delay to allow Doric to think up more palatable ways of presenting the scheme. But of course it won’t be able to, because the whole concept cooked up between Doric and the VoWHDC is obviously a ghastly mistake both in overreaching scale and savage impact as well as in character.

It won’t be any good tinkering with it. Doric should now either pull out altogether or they, or someone else, should go back to the drawing board and generate an entirely different, much more modest and altogether more appropriate proposal responsive to the ideas and requirements of the local community.

I don’t see any sign of this happening. It suggests that Doric is still being led to believe its scheme will be given the go-ahead.

Of course such an outcome would be a travesty. It would make a mockery of any democratic principle in the planning process as well as being a disaster for the area. So what is really going on behind the scenes?

Another nail in the coffin for pedestrians

Oxford Mail: Nurse got me through some difficult times

2:00pm Friday 19th December 2014

The county council cabinet decision to allow the relocation of the Marcham Road pelican crossing about 100 metres further from the junction with Drayton Road, and to install an additional crossing on Ock Street to the east of Drayton Road, is another nail in the coffin for many groups including motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Many bus users will disagree with increase

Oxford Mail: Nurse got me through some difficult times

2:00pm Friday 19th December 2014

In November, 3,400 residents in Ascott-, Milton- and Shipton-under-Wychwood lost their direct bus to Witney. The county council has saved an hourly service as far as Burford, but there passengers must change to a different bus to complete their journey.

I am trying to return painting to right family

Oxford Mail: Nurse got me through some difficult times

2:00pm Friday 19th December 2014

As another Christmas approaches I wish to make one more attempt to return a painting by the late Mrs Elizabeth M Aitken to her family, whose whereabouts I unfortunately have no knowledge of. Mrs Aitken exhibited at the Royal Academy and was looked after in her later life by my late mother, an RAF widow.

Officials can defer to a more appropriate time

Oxford Mail:

2:00pm Friday 19th December 2014

Are we expected to believe those councillors who voted for the 19 per cent increase in the basic allowance did so to attract younger people to become councillors? Were they themselves attracted by the money?

There is chaos when road is closed for a day

Oxford Mail: Nurse got me through some difficult times

2:00pm Friday 19th December 2014

I was very concerned to read your article (‘More traffic chaos feared as major roadworks loom’, December 15) about the proposed closure of the Cowley Road for three weeks in February.

Please would people like you stop going on, things need to change and move forward yes there may be a few hundred objections to the development but let's look at how many of these are truly valid and live in Botley and not miles away so are only really concered about Botley getting something fantastic or their school run.

Now let's consider the fact that people will only complain if they are unhappy about something or against it, now put this to the thousands of people who have not commented and live in Botley, I think you will find there is a lot more support for THIS development than you want to admit.

Oh and for your information a lot of the shops in Botley are now for this development. Yes it's a shame, but things need to move forward and better implies bigger, you can't have the first without the latter with all the new homes being built around Botley the current size won't support the community.

People complaining about the gym please stop if other gyms can't compete that is their problem this is all about healthy competition.

Yes there are too many student rooms in the development but they need to make their money back some how, and do you really think another developer will be interested in working on this site after all the trouble people like this have been causing and shouting about? This is for the good of Botley.
