It won’t do any good to tinker with this scheme

The West Way Shopping Centre

EVENTUALLY Doric submitted its proposal for the redevelopment of the West Way Shopping Centre at Botley in December 2013.

There followed a period for comment by concerned bodies and the public. As everybody knows the reaction was overwhelmingly against the scheme, not just in detail but of the whole concept.

This was not nimbyism – people could see that the scheme was completely wrong for the neighbourhood in just about every way possible.

Since then we have had delay after delay to allow Doric to think up more palatable ways of presenting the scheme. But of course it won’t be able to, because the whole concept cooked up between Doric and the VoWHDC is obviously a ghastly mistake both in overreaching scale and savage impact as well as in character.

It won’t be any good tinkering with it. Doric should now either pull out altogether or they, or someone else, should go back to the drawing board and generate an entirely different, much more modest and altogether more appropriate proposal responsive to the ideas and requirements of the local community.

I don’t see any sign of this happening. It suggests that Doric is still being led to believe its scheme will be given the go-ahead.

Of course such an outcome would be a travesty. It would make a mockery of any democratic principle in the planning process as well as being a disaster for the area. So what is really going on behind the scenes?

I notice six plane trees in Castle Street have been deprived of their branches, ready for the Westgate Centre improvements.

Looking forward to many more wonderful pictures

Iit is good to see a picture of the four nominees for the 2015 Regional Press Awards in Wednesday’s Oxford Mail. You have a long history of extraordinarily good photographers at the Oxford Mail and The Oxford Times.

It’s high time the rest of Europe went to Italy’s aid

Oxford Mail:

Pointing out that, on the day marking the 70th anniversary of the relief of Buchenwald death camp, 400 people fleeing from religious and political persecution were drowned when a boat capsized in the Mediterranean, Peter Unsworth asks whether anyone can tell him what we have learned during the intervening period (Cabbages and Kings, April 17).

Legal rulings make a mockery of justice

Straight answers are needed

Oxford Mail:

The designs for the unfolding Westgate development are beginning to seem completely soulless compared with the spiritually inspired and timelessly beautiful mediaeval Oxford buildings...

Please would people like you stop going on, things need to change and move forward yes there may be a few hundred objections to the development but let's look at how many of these are truly valid and live in Botley and not miles away so are only really concered about Botley getting something fantastic or their school run.

Now let's consider the fact that people will only complain if they are unhappy about something or against it, now put this to the thousands of people who have not commented and live in Botley, I think you will find there is a lot more support for THIS development than you want to admit.

Oh and for your information a lot of the shops in Botley are now for this development. Yes it's a shame, but things need to move forward and better implies bigger, you can't have the first without the latter with all the new homes being built around Botley the current size won't support the community.

People complaining about the gym please stop if other gyms can't compete that is their problem this is all about healthy competition.

Yes there are too many student rooms in the development but they need to make their money back some how, and do you really think another developer will be interested in working on this site after all the trouble people like this have been causing and shouting about? This is for the good of Botley.
