IN 1997 when Tony Blair, pictured, and the Labour Party came to power and gave devolution to Scotland, we were told at the time that this would not lead to separatism.

Now a referendum is to be held as to whether Scotland should leave the union or not.

It is my hope is that the obvious disappointment that will be felt by the losing side does not turn into the type of resentment and extremism that has plagued the people of Northern Ireland for so many decades.
