IN response to Sally Reynolds’ letter, (July 7) I suggest that she gets her ‘rose-coloured’ glasses checked as she appears to have misread what I was advocating in my original letter.

My point was that children should be aware that sometimes sacrifices by our Armed Forces have to be made to maintain the freedoms we enjoy today. I have never advocated invading other countries to impose our will on them. In fact, I believe that the incursions into Iraq and Afghanistan were a mistake. I am not a warmonger but a realist and having had first-hand experience of the awful things which war can produce I think that I am better qualified on this subject than she may be.

She talks of western ideals being forced on other nations yet says nothing about Isis forcing its brutal ideals on a planned Caliphate that includes most of southern Europe – a regime that (if ever we became part of it) she, as a female, would not be allowed to read, let alone write to a newspaper. Chamberlain appeased Hitler and look at the result. If she is so sure that she has the way forward to the peace we all want, then I suggest she travels to Iraq and speaks to the leader of Isis.

No, Sally, my argument stands.
