WHY is it that all we hear about the West Way precinct development is how the residents of Botley don’t want it and how we should all complain?

I feel a redevelopment of the tired and dilapidated buildings is a godsend. Elms Parade has a very limited appeal and no heritage value. A large supermarket, providing plentiful employment, is very necessary. Is it fair to deny residents with less mobility cheaper prices and more choice? There are currently 153 scattered parking places. New facilities will mean 550. Student accommodation will mean more business for local traders, more choice and help support local restaurants. There will be a new and larger church, surgery, hall and library. As for a cinema – I would welcome being able to enjoy a meal and see a new flick locally.

This wider range of modern facilities should be welcomed.

Field house is a difficult issue. How the VWHDC manage the residents is going to be sensitive.

Let’s hope they can resolve this.

Some feel that the frontage of Elms Parade should be preserved and this is not in the proposals. I recall the towers of Wembley Stadium which were moved and are now a design statement with a nod to the past – perhaps Doric could do something similar to appease those who love the frontage.

I feel that Doric has come up with a great proposal, with elements that need sensitivity and design tweaks.

As residents of Botley, we have a duty towards future generations for a development that is a positive attribute to the community and all those who will move to the area. The area does need regenerating. If you are concerned, tell Doric in a positive manner because no one wants complainers. Your voice will be lost.

So work with Doric, not against them.
