COMMENT: Take pride in our part of Olympic opening

WE ARE so proud of Oxfordshire’s involvement in the Olympics so far.

Our athletes have begun their quest for medals and volunteers played a pivotal role in making the opening ceremony a show to remember.

And of course Cameron MacRitchie, the teenage rowing star from Banbury Road, Oxford, had the honour of lighting the cauldron itself.

It was fitting that young athletes took centre stage.

We hope he fulfils his ambition and sets the Games alight with an oar, not a torch, in his hand in 2014.

County businesses have also played their part, including communications, landscaping and transport.

And our servicemen and women were represented by two RAF Brize Norton airmen during the opening ceremony.

It proves the Olympics really are the people’s Games.

We will be cheering on all our athletes over the coming fortnight.

An Oxfordshire medal would be the icing on the Olympic cake.
