Comment: Club's future is crucial to Leys youth

IT would be a shame if the Oxford Blackbirds did suffer irreparable damage because the funding it has come to rely upon has been cut.

This is not to criticise Oxford City Council. It, through the south east area committee, has done a lot for this club, recognising, as we do, the valuable community function it fills.

And the club itself certainly does not appear to sit back with its hand out.

Recently it held a very successful open day to try to fill this hole in the budget.

What is really at stake here is the continuing enjoyment of close to 300 youngsters, their coaches and the parents on the sidelines.

If the Blackbirds found it financially too crippling to continue, then where would the vast majority of these people end up?

The fact they are working hard as a club to fundraise is a positive.

But we hope that someone from the outside will take the chance to offer more financial assistance and ensure this club (and others too if they are also struggling) survives for the good of the community.
