Cowley Road can hardly be described as a crime-riddled ghetto, but it is not without its problems.
The street’s economy means it is busy from early in the morning until the wee small hours.
Now a radio link system is to be rolled out along the road to make sure any trouble can be quickly nipped in the bud.
If anything, it is somewhat surprising it has taken so long for an established system to be set up.
Cowley Road is one of the city’s lively spots after hours.
It’s not just students – the street’s pubs, clubs and bars are a big draw for city folk and tourists.
The extension of the city’s CCTV network to cover the street was hugely welcomed.
Now using shopkeepers and landlords as an extra set of eyes and ears should further improve the situation.
Police reckon it will make East Oxford safer and we support any move to help that goal.
