Since the scale of proposed budget savings by Oxfordshire County Council were laid bare there has understandably been plenty of concern expressed by users of services which face cuts.

Saturday's demonstration in Bonn Square by campaigners against children's centre closures showed just how determined some people are to stop those cuts happening.

It is not the first time children's centre campaigners have protested in public and it is safe to assume it will not be the last.

They have combined old-fashioned street protests with online research and digital petitions and at the moment are holding out to save all 44 centres.

The county council has difficult choices to make, and it has been suggested volunteers could run some centres.

There comes a point when there is only so much unpaid volunteers can do.

Of course, the county council has been put in a tricky position, due to huge funding cuts imposed by central government.

But our politicians must weigh up the trade-off between short-term savings if children’s centres close, and the potential for people who use their services to turn to health and social care instead, which will increase funding pressure in those areas instead.
