ONE of the most enduring images visitors to Oxford will take away with them is that of hundreds of people pedalling their way through the city streets.
The dreaming spires are well known for looking over winding streets bustling with bicycles as people make their way to work or just take in the beautiful sights of the city.
Road improvements to make it safer for cyclists are gradually creeping in and it’s important that the city has ambition to emulate great cycling cities like Copenhagen and Amsterdam.
But such vision takes work and much is still needed to get more folk on their bikes.
It’s excellent that the city council is proposing more than 40 separate schemes to make life easier for cyclists.
But anyone who bikes through Oxford knows that there are still some routes that leave one battling with potholes, poorly-marked lanes and inconsiderate motorists.
We need to focus on those areas, such as Cowley Road that badly need work, so that we can create a safe, flowing route to get to anywhere on the city on two wheels.
