THE scenes of thousands of people flooding the streets of London for the marathon two weeks ago were heart-warming.

And this weekend it was Oxfordshire’s turn to shine as runners did their bit for some fantastic causes.

More than 4,000 people, all ages and sizes, took part in the Pink Ribbon Walk at Blenheim on Saturday, Oxford’s Fun Run and then yesterday’s Town and Gown.

It’s expected they’ll raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for Breast Cancer Care and Muscular Dystrophy with those in the fun run choosing their own charity.

For people such as breast cancer survivor Nicky Monk taking part in these type of events is a chance to give something back.

The 52-year-old, who took part in the Ribbon Walk with her daughter, sister and friend, was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago.

With the support of those around her Nicky, like many others taking part, has managed to get through the dark days.

With so many charity events organised it’s a challenge for organisers to attract so many people. But the scenes across Oxfordshire this weekend are an example of why they’re so important.
