WORKING together is always hailed as a big solution to problems. Often known as “partnership working” in the jargon-fuelled world of local government and emergency services, it’s been a buzzword for years.

While it’s true that bigger beasts have more clout, an alliance between Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire county councils will be interesting to watch.

With all three councils currently led by Tory groups, right now it’s the stuff of dreams for their respective leaders.

Although not quite “merging” into one body yet, such a move seems to be on the mind of Oxfordshire County Council leader Ian Hudspeth.

However, the larger the authority the more money it undoubtedly swallows.

Our civic leader must ensure this endeavour delivers the best deal for taxpayers.

The county has already been delivered some welcome funding from Government for infrastructure, mainly for our roads, which will be welcome to many.

If this grand plan works and more powers and cash are delivered for Oxfordshire through the alliance, then great news.

However, it’s an unknown, and although similar moves might have worked elsewhere, whether it works for us remains to be seen.
