IT was a sad day for literature yesterday with the passing of Oxford novelist PD James.

She was one of the city’s greats which is saying something alongside the likes of CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien, Philip Pullman and, of course, close friend Colin Dexter who paid tribute to Baroness James.

She enthralled decades of readers with novels including Children of Men, which many will have seen on screen after it was made into a film in 2006.

Described as a beautiful writer and one of the more stylish and distinguished authors of the 20th and 21st centuries in the crime genre, Baroness James was also known for her support in real-life for literature. She was a patron of the Oxford Literary Festival and supported the Oxford Playhouse in her time.

An inspiration to writers and readers of all ages, Baroness James will be fondly remembered for a remarkable legacy.
