INSTALLING solar panels on Oxford’s council houses will be an interesting experiment.

There is, of course, the green argument but we are more interested in the other kind of green benefit – the saving of cold, hard cash for council tenants.

England may not be the kind of country that lends itself naturally to benefiting from the sun’s energising rays, but if the scheme can pay for itself then it has to be worth looking at rolling out to other neighbourhoods.

We’re all watching the pennies and stopping them disappearing into the pockets of voracious energy companies can only be a good thing.
