AN OVERHANGING tree that a council pledged to chop back 'as a priority' is still causing visibility issues for drivers.

A resident has complained for the second time to Oxfordshire County Council about thick foliage blocking a footpath along Iffley Road, East Oxford, which was first flagged up back in May as a potential hazard.

Pictures attached to the complaint, logged via the FixMyStreet problem-reporting website, show a huge cascade of leaves growing downwards and taking up much of the path, near the Radcliffe Road junction.

In the initial report, posted in May, the resident said: "The epicormic growth causes an issue with the vision splay when exiting driveways, which in turn is an issue for both pedestrians and cyclists.

"In the past it was dealt with annually but it has been two years since the last [cutback]."

A response from the county council, dated June 27, said: "The trees described in your enquiry are part of our annual epicormic removal program, where we remove the basal and stem growth the trees put on.

"These works can often be required to be done twice in a season.

"We started works on June 1 and this area will now be done as a priority."

The resident responded to the council on Saturday to note that it had not been fixed.

The comment stated: "It is now almost impossible to manoeuvre out of the driveway without causing an issue.

"It also difficult to pass as the footway is narrowed so much. You can just about get a single pushchair through."

The council told the resident that contractors had been asked to carry out works to the tree in the location described, and said this should happen 'as soon as possible in the coming weeks'.
