A CAR-FREE development in a Jericho street under 'heavy parking stress' has been backed by highways bosses.

Plans to convert an office in Walton Crescent into three separate flats have been put forward by Oxford University Press.

The building, number 40, was used by OUP to compile the second Oxford English Dictionary Supplement in the 1950s.

Oxfordshire County Council - the highways authority - welcomed the fact it would be car-free and said the road "suffers from heavy on-street parking stress".

A decision could be made by August 1.
