BUS campaigners have revealed their solution to Oxford's congestion after branding a one-way system plan 'loopy'.

Bus Users Oxford criticised proposals for a one-way traffic system and two-loop bus system put forward by consultancy Phil Jones Associates - on behalf of Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council.

A south-to-west loop would serve the end of Abingdon Road around Thames Street through the Westgate Centre to Frideswide Square.

The north-to-east loop would use Longwall Street, High Street, Cornmarket Street and, in one case, Broad Street and Holywell Street – with 500 metres separating the loops.

Chairman of Bus Users Oxford, Hugh Jaeger, said: "Our policy is still for buses to be restored to Cornmarket in one direction and to continue to use Queen Street in one direction.

"Cornmarket and Queen Street could form part of a bus loop with George Street, Worcester Street and New Road.

"It might be possible to reduce George Street to one-way, and therefore to widen its pavements, but that would depend how many buses per hour were allowed to use the loop."

All four options put forward by Phil Jones Associates would see buses banned from Queen Street and George Street.
