THERE could be chaos at Oxford University and others across the country if pension worries are not solved, a union has warned.
The University and College Union (UCU) said lectures and classes could be cancelled if worries it has over the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) are left unresolved.
UCU said a proposed level of benefits were a 'bolt from the blue', and it will ballot its members on whether to take strike action from next Monday until January 19.
The union said 'substantial disruption' of 50 of the largest universities in the UK could be caused if members chose to strike.
UCU general secretary Sally Hunt said: "After months of negotiations these plans are a bolt from the blue and would effectively destroy the USS scheme. It is categorically the worst proposal I have received from universities on any issue in 20 years of representing university staff."
