A MENTAL health campaigner is looking for 'superheroes' to change the way we look at mental health.

'Time to Change Champions' across the country use their own experience of mental health problems to alter people's perceptions and actions over the subject.

Paul Hicks, from Witney, is a Time to Change Champion of three years and has organised activities and events with support from West Oxfordshire District Council and Witney Town Council.

He said: “I mentioned mental health superheroes as I believe it takes courage to talk about personal experiences of mental health problems in public.

"One in four people will experience a mental health problem each year yet there is still stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness and this is where I want to change the conversation and make it more common place and accepted within society.

Mr Hicks is looking for people to help organise future events across West Oxfordshire.

Time To Change is run by charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness and defines champions as 'challenging stigma in their communities'.

Volunteers are encouraged to meet people and share experiences face-to-face as a way of changing people’s attitudes or stigmas towards those who suffer mental health problems.

He added: "My self confidence has started to increase, my organisational skills have developed and I have made lots of contacts within the community. I have seen this voluntary role as another step towards a full recovery in the future.”
