OXFORD University's students' union has said more should be done to provide shelter for homeless people around the city this winter.

As the Oxford Mail reported on October 10, despite an extensive Oxford City Council search, no building have been offered up by the university or any other city businesses.

The search was started in April after some homeless people squatted in four city buildings over the winter.

The Oxford University Students' Union Vice-President, charities and community, Thomas Barringer said: "Where the university has empty buildings that could be used to provide accommodation for homeless people in Oxford then it should be looking to make this space available for use by local charities."

It is thought there are about 100 people sleeping rough on Oxford's streets, the majority of whom have issues with alcohol or drugs. Oxford City Council is spending £1.4m on providing shelter for homeless people over the next six years.
