HISTORIAN Dr Hubert Zawadzki will speak about his own experiences following the Second World War to highlight the forgotten history of Polish resettlement in the UK.

The war and its immediate aftermath brought thousands of Polish servicemen and civilians to Britain and of the numerous Polish resettlement camps across the country 14 were situated in Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire.

The talk will explain why such camps were established and will set their story in the wider context of international politics.

Dr Zawadzki himself lived in various Polish resettlement camps until the age of 11, the last one near Chipping Camden.

Entitled ‘The Reluctant Exiles: Polish Resettlement Camps in Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds 1946 -1970’ the talk will be in Trinity Church Hall, Conduit Road, Abingdon on Tuesday at 2.30pm.

Dr Zawadzki is the joint author of A Concise History of Poland and has appeared on the BBC television series Who do you think you are?
