A RISE in hate crime in Oxford since last year’s EU referendum could lead to the council writing to Theresa May to change the law.

City councillor Tom Hayes has proposed a motion for the council to write to the Prime Minister and also to work with Thames Valley Police on practical measures to fight hate crime.

Mr Hayes’ motion said the maximum prison sentence a court can give for homophobic, transphobic or disability common assault is six months.

He said it ‘undermines victim confidence in the law’ and was concerned some groups were not being protected enough.

Councillors will vote on whether to write to Number 10 at a full council meeting on Thursday.
