ELDERLY people and the younger generation are being called on to work side-by-side in a special collaborative arts competition.

Headington grandmother Avril Lethbridge and The Oxford Academy have launched Then and Now, a visual and written arts contest encouraging intergenerational work.

Pairs comprising one ‘junior partner’ aged five to 16 and one ‘senior partner’ aged 50 or above are invited to submit a creative written or visual art piece before the extended deadline on June 29.

Hannah Jamieson of The Oxford Academy said: “We set up the competition up to try and bridge the gap between generations and embrace the comparison of eras.”

Mrs Lethbridge, 85, of Thorncliffe Road, said: “We’ve got a granny writing poetry with her grandchild, and all sorts of interesting things where schoolchildren have gone into older people’s homes.”

Submissions will be on display during the Oxford Literary Festival at the school in Littlemore on July 3, with winners announced at a ceremony later in the month.
