A BLUE plaque will be unveiled to pay tribute the legacy and generosity of a former villager.

Edmund Bradstock died in 1607 and left cash for the poor in Appleford and Sutton Courtenay, and money to fund a school.

The Oxfordshire Blue Plaques Board has approved plans for a plaque at his former home, which will be unveiled on Saturday, June 3.

It will be placed at Orchard House in Appleford, where he lived with his wife until his death.

Writing in the Sutton Courtenay village newsletter, a trustee of the Charity of Edmund Bradstock for the Poor said the board said their case for the plaque was ‘unique’.

Trustee Christopher Owen wrote: “Both villages continue to enjoy Edmund Bradstock’s generosity today, more than four centuries after his bequest was made.”

The charity continues today, supporting causes and within both neighbouring villages, as well as the Edmund Bradstock for Education charity.

Residents are welcome to attend to the plaque ceremony.

The Reverend Helen Kendrick, of All Saints’ Church in Sutton Courtenay, will lead the unveiling at 3pm.

Benefactor Mr Bradstock left acres of land in his will, property and cash to help poor people in the area.
