STUDENTS have done their school proud by impressing business heads with a baking book.

Larkmead School in Abingdon won the district stage of the Young Enterprise Company Programme for the first time in the secondary school’s history.

The national competition challenges students to form a business, which is then judged by a panel of industry experts for chance of being named young enterprise company of the year.

Larkmead’s team ‘Nascent’ won the South and Vale final at Abingdon School last week, impressing judges after a presentation, interviews and company report about their cookbook ‘Oh Crumbs...’

The Faringdon Road school’s headteacher Chris Harris said: “We are delighted with their success.

“Enterprise in its widest sense is an essential skill for young people in such a demanding and changing world, but also an exciting world. We are pleased this group of students are excelling in this.”

The group beat teams from Abingdon School, St Helen & St Katharine, Our Lady’s Abingdon and Wallingford School.

Judges were apparently impressed with Nascent’s creative stand as it was laid out like a picnic, with a selection of cakes from their cookbook.

The book was compiled with recipes submitted by staff members and the team gained advice from business advisers at Unipart and Smeg UK.

Team member Jodie Morris also scooped an award for ‘outstanding personal contribution’.

The students will compete at the county final at Said Business School in Oxford, facing nine other teams in May.
