GIRLS at Headington School learned more about the fight against tuberculosis with a talk from an Oxford University academic.
Professor Helen McShane visited the school earlier this week to speak to pupils about the work she and her team have been focussing on and how it has contributed to global progress in TB vaccine development.
Vaccination is the most cost-effective health intervention ever developed.
Prof McShane and her team have new ideas for developing a TB vaccine, for example by enhancing the BCG vaccine in conjunction with something else such as conserved cells to stimulate a different cellular immune response.
A future TB vaccine might also be inhaled instead of injected, as this would be pain free and would mimic the route of infection, which might be more effective.
Girls also heard about how important international collaboration is crucial in Prof McShane’s work so that vaccines can be developed quickly.
