Briton dies in hotel balcony plunge

Oxford Mail: Tourist Charlotte Faris has died after falling from a balcony in Majorca Tourist Charlotte Faris has died after falling from a balcony in Majorca

A British tourist has died after reportedly falling from a hotel balcony in Majorca - the third Briton to die on the Spanish island in less than a month.

Charlotte Faris, 23, plunged to her death during the early hours of Saturday morning in the popular party resort of Magaluf.

The holidaymaker from Stevenage, Herts, had checked into the Teix Hotel just hours earlier, according to reports. The Foreign Office confirmed the death.

A FCO spokesman said: "We are aware and can confirm the death of British national Charlotte Faris in Majorca on May 5. We are providing consular assistance to her family."

Benjamin Harper, 28, from Twickenham, south west London, fell to his death at the four-star Sol Antillas hotel in Magaluf on April 20.

It is believed the roofer had gone out on to the balcony for a cigarette before leaning over and falling to his death while on a stag do.

It came three days after the death of Adam Atkinson, 20, who suffered fatal injuries when he reportedly fell from a stairwell at the Hotel Martinique in the same resort.

Doesn't this throw up any red flags to authorities in the British consulate. One death in a year i could see being an accident. Two deaths in a years maybe. But three deaths in the same manner in one month. COME ON???? This is extremely questionable to say the least!!!

Whenever I have been to the Canary Islands, which are part of Spain, I have noticed how low some hotel balconies are. Last time when I was there, the window in my eighth floor room had no restraining device to prevent it from opening too far. What's more the bottom of the window was only about 3ft, perhaps less, from the floor.

Since holidays and overindulgence in alcohol often go together, I think the tour operators and hotels should have a duty of care towards their customers.

I realise that some falls from balconies are as a result of folly - trying to jump over to the next one where their mates are.

I agree with news fanatic. If everyone know that drinking to excess and holidays in the sun go together particularly for the British, then duty of care must br a consideration here. These balconies and windows seem very low, they shouldn't be allowed to pass safety test, particlularly sbove the sevond floor. it sounds like a criminal offence had been committed here.
