Criticism over A34 crash chaos

HIGHWAYS bosses last night defended their role in trying to prevent long queues on the A34 yesterday.

traffic was backed up for nearly 10 miles after the A34 southbound was closed for six hours between the Chilton Interchange and junction 13 of the M4.

Chauffeur company boss Nathan Thomas, of Enslow near Kidlington, said: “Making drivers more aware of it was probably a sensible thing to do.”

The closure was caused by a crash between two lorries at 2.30am, which also led to a diesel spill.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: “We provided information to traffic and travel media from the early hours. We provide information directly to the public in a variety of ways, including via our website, iPhone app, and message signs on the road."

From the rather limited information given above it seems rather excessive to take 6 hours to recover two trucks and clear up a diesel spill, given the equipment available today in this allegedly modern age.

Did anyone hear the loony tune on Radio Oxford calling for a ban on lorries using the A34? Not sure where they'd go??
Some others were calling for more freight to go by rail; good idea but how do you get the rail containers from railway yard to the end user? Also Oxford no longer has a goods depot.

all good points. there has to be road transport from railhead to end user. however, the A34 doesn't appear to have many, if any, matrix signs. considering the traffic, Abingdon didn't seem that busy. trouble is, with a diesel spill, quite often the road needs resurfacing, as the fuel gets into the surface, and causes slippery conditions when it rains. you then get motorists moaning about that, so the authorities need to ensure the road is cleaned properly first time round

Spilt diesel is lethal for motorcyclists. Every scrap has to be cleared from the road before it can be re-opened. Lorries are vital for our economy so we have to work around their impacts.
