I would like Southern Electric to explain why the power went off. We had a series of power cuts before Christmas, and this level of unreliability is unacceptable. It repeatedly stops our business in its tracks.

ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND homes and businesses were affected by today's lunchtime power cut.

Southern Electric has just said that power has been restored across the county.

It was caused by a safety trip knocking out its high voltage network because of an unknown problem.

An investigation will be launched to establish what caused this now that power has been restored in Oxfordshire.

Southern Electric spokesman Sam O’Connor said: “We’ve got a very flexible network so we were able to route supply remotely via our control room in Portsmouth.”

An IT company that doesn't have a UPS system? Can't blame Southern Electric for that.

Shilton road area in Carterton had a massive powercut yesterday (lunch time through til 7pm ish), after a pylon caught fire. Two fire engines and two Southern Electric vans came up to sort it out initially. After the power came back on, the fire engines left but Southern Electric were there until midnight at least.
What causes pylons to catch alight? There was nothing close enough to it that could have been on fire and spread...? Scary!

Something that affects 100,000 people? I'd imagine so. This is the Oxford Mail, what did you want, gang warfare on the ring road?

It's an IT company with plenty of UPS backup but no diesel generator to take over when the batteries run out. My complaint is that we shouldn't need to buy one. Southern Electric have an obligation to provide a reliable service.

Considering what they do, I'd say their service is extremely reliable, nothing is guaranteed.
In the past 20 years, I certainly can't remember more than a dozen power cuts, I'd say that's pretty good going, considering all the elements involved in getting power to the wall socket.
