Clothing chain in trouble

The Oxfordshire retail scene has suffered another blow after discount clothing chain Peacocks announced it intends to go into administration.

The group has four Peacocks stores at Headington and Cowley in Oxford, and Banbury and Didcot, while its susidiary Bonmarche has outlets in Cowley, Banbury and Didcot. All are continuing to trade.

The company said managers had entered into “exclusive talks” with a potential buyer and that to protect the business during this process, it had filed an intention to appoint administrators.

The Cardiff-based retailer employs more than 10,000 staff at 611 shops across the UK.

It's not about the labels. It's all about the might of Primark.
Peacocks couldn't come close.
Bon Marche might just make it because the target market is different and the brand is more established.

Peacocks has actually been making a profit. The problem has been the state owned bank RBS pulling the plug on the financing, when private bank Barclays was ready to back it. Scandalous really.

Bit crass cubist, there are a lot of people with bills to pay who work there and are most likely worried sick.

A High Street blood bath was predicted towards the end of last year and sadly it seems to be coming true. Very difficult times ahead for many and I empathise with all concerned.

Hellox is exactly right - higher-end retailers have little to fear but 'cheap and cheerfuls' like Peacocks simply can't compete with the range, price and yes, the quality of Primark. Anything I've ever bought from Peacocks has fallen to bits after a few washes and I've voted with my feet - I no longer shop there.

Yep your right, I would be a buy out option for Primark...
