Coffee chain's arrival worries Headington traders

INDEPENDENT traders in Headington have hit out at plans for a Costa Coffee shop.

The chain has applied to change the use of the former Cartridge World shop in London Road, opposite a Starbucks coffee shop.

But while Headington residents would be spoilt for choice, with seven coffee outlets in the area already, existing traders have voiced concern.

Souad Elbarhdadi has run La Croissanterie Café in Old High Street for 19 years. She said: “They’re a big company and we’re just a small business.

“We work very hard and give people good quality and service but if Costa opens it will affect us.

“So many coffee shops are closing. It’s a big battle.”

The shop Costa wants to take over has been empty for the past six months since Cartridge World closed.

As well as applying to change the use of the premises from retail to both retail and a cafe, Costa wants to install a new shop front and an illuminated sign.

If approved, it would become the sixth Costa branch in the city – along with two Costa kiosks in petrol stations – while Starbucks has five branches across Oxford.

Mo Garni, of Mojo’s Cafe and Sandwich Bar, in London Road, said: “It’s a bit more competition and it will hit everybody in the area.”

Last week it emerged Costa was planning to move into a former music shop in Wallingford, making it the first national coffee chain to open in the town.

But Johnny Pugsley, of delicatessen Jacobs and Field in Old High Street, said: “It was inevitable. Starbucks and Costa tend to follow each other.

“I think we’re a totally different ball game. We serve more traditional coffee and I’m confident we can keep going.

“People come here because they like the coffee. I think it will affect Starbucks more.”

No-one was available for comment from Costa Coffee last night.

Oxford City Council is considering the planning application but a date for a decision has yet to be set.

And why is the shop empty? Is it because the landlord wants a big name brand who'll pay more rent - and so the smaller businesses get pushed out, and then the brand drives out the others?

That's exactly what happened, Christine. The man who ran Cartridge World wasn't allowed to renew his lease, and then a planning application was approved that included customer toilets (not normally found in a small retail shop, but essential in a café).

Don't Costa do it for branding and not for profit? Making their exercise purely to push out others and effect locals who have traded for years. But then this is typical of the big names plans of forcing there way everywhere with no concern for local people and jobs.

Hmm, very interesting.

I hope the residents on Abingdon road area are reading the above posts and learn from you guys on how to protect your local area from being taken over by big businesses which ruins the local traders who have been there for years!

The Abingdon road lot should get rid of their chemist and open up a Costa.

ox-cabby - I'm surprised to not see Peter here telling you all how you must be insane to resist such an advancement to your part of the world...

Costa Coffee would be welcome if Headington did not have eight cafés already. Meanwhile you can't buy many of the non-food necessities of life in what calls itself a shopping centre.

Headington has Starbucks, Jacobs & Field, Café Noir, La Croissanterie, Queen's, Café Bonjour, Mojo's, and Subway for coffee.

Now the larger chains are having trouble sucking profit out of new builds, convienience stores and coffee shops are the new target of big business. Chain shops effectively suck money out of local areas. Local firms tend to recycle their profit locally.
