CHEMIST Fabrice Birembaut shows Lord Mayor of Oxford Elise Benjamin the science behind compounds as part of events to celebrate chemistry.

At the city’s Botanic Gardens, the Oxford University scientist showed Ms Benjamin and daughter Beri, 10, how compounds extracted from nutmeg can be used in medicine and cosmetics.

Mr Birembaut said: “It was a good way to promote chemistry to the public. Chemistry is all around us.”

This month’s event was to celebrate the Royal Society of Chemistry’s International Year Of Chemistry.

The university has produced posters which describe how compounds derived from plants are used in everyday substances such as medicines.

Workshops based on the posters and trails around the gardens to identify plants used are taking place to the end of the year.
