RAF Benson personnel swapped the dry deserts of Afghan-istan for the cold, wet surroundings of the River Thames to complete a marathon swim.

The 28-mile swim from Eynsham Lock to Benson Marina was organised by Sergeant Alex Hicks in aid of the Royal British Legion.

Sgt Hicks, who flies Merlin helicopters in Afghanistan as part of the 28 (Army Co-operation) Squadron, said: “It was extremely tough. We each took it in turns to swim one mile at a time and managed to keep each mile down to 30 minutes.

“We swam the final 800 metres together and the adrenaline ensured we finished in style.”

The swim, which took place on June 28, started at 5am and finished at 7.30pm.

Also in the team were Squadron Leader Toby Sawbridge, Corporal Andy Heaton, Corporal Mel Sears and Corporal Stuart Tipton.

Sgt Hicks, who masterminded the swim, is a keen supporter of the Royal British Legion and a member of the Watlington branch.

They were followed by a support boat and a canoe for the entire distance of the swim.

The group was welcomed to Benson Marina by Tom Holden, vice chairman of the Watlington branch of the Royal British Legion.

He said: “What a spectacular achievement. It is extremely impressive to see these young people work so hard to raise money for a worthy cause.

“I was impressed when I saw them spring out of the water with great enthusiasm at the end. Well done to them all.”

The group was also greeted by RAF Benson station commander, Group Captain Richard Mason.

He said: “An incredible achievement by Sgt Hicks and his team. It’s fantastic and humbling to see such tenacity and endurance while raising money for such a worthy cause, the same tenacity and endurance that the men and women of the Merlin Force demonstrate every day in Afghanistan.”
