WHEN it comes to gardening, size definitely matters for ‘Taff’ Morgan-Jones after producing a 3ft-long marrow.
The gargantuan veg, which tips the scales at 86lb, will be the star of the show today when Mr Morgan-Jones hopes to win the biggest marrow contest at the Wheatley Village Produce Association’s show for the sixth year running.
Mr Morgan-Jones, 69, pictured with his grandchildren Amy, seven, and James, two, only planted the marrow in the Windmill Lane allotments on May 30 when it was just 6in high.
But the marrow ballooned in size in just three months after being fed four gallons of water every other day.
He said: “It was a bit tricky with the hot and dry weather but it’s grown at an incredible speed and was putting on pounds and pounds every week.”
Mr Morgan-Jones has grown giant marrows before weighing more than 60lb but this is his biggest one to date.
The marrow was so big he needed three friends to help him load it into the back of his car.
Wife Gill said: “This year’s marrow is astonishing. It’s a whopper. It really is.”
Mr Morgan-Jones’s marrow will be on display at the 70th annual association show at Merry Bellls Hall in Wheatley High Street.
The show, which has 119 different classes, takes place between 2pm and 5pm.
