Best wishes for church project

WORK has started on the renovation of a 19th century Oxfordshire church, helped along by the good wishes of its parishioners.

St Peter’s Church in Wolvercote, built in 1860, is about to undergo a series of developments to bring it into the 21st century.

Work started on the project on Monday, beginning with alterations to the church hall to include new toilets with disabled access.

Work will be carried out in a series of phased developments, culminating in a complete renovation of the church, with a glazed link between the hall and church.

At a service on Sunday, churchgoers were asked if they would like to fill in a card to be hung on a tree in the church grounds.

Vicar the Rev Dr Mark Butchers, pictured reading some of the cards, said: “We asked people to write on the cards their thoughts, hopes or prayers about the new building project and what it would mean to the community.”

More than 50 people completed cards.

Dr Butchers said he was excited to have the builders on site.

He added: “It feels great to finally have work under way. It has been a long road.”
