Two injured in Headington crash

TWO people were injured today when a car crashed into a lamppost.

The accident took place in Headington, Oxford, when a blue Nissan Micra swerved off the road, across a pedestrian crossing, and into the obstruction.

The driver, believed to be a middle-aged female, was taken to John Radcliffe Hospital after the crash on London Road, at the junction with Windmill Road. A bystander was also taken by the ambulance after being hit by debris.

The extent of their injuries was last night unknown, but witnesses said both had walked away from the crash.

Punters in Ladbrokes betting shop across the road heard the crash at 1.30pm.

Employee Fiona Molloy said the noise had been deafening.

She said: “It was loud enough for everyone to go silent in here and it’s a loud place to be.”

John Willoughby, 62, was also nearby. He said: “The driver was lucky to get out, but it was even more lucky that more people weren’t stood at the pedestrian crossing at the time.”

Danny Murphy, 41, who was carrying out roadworks, also saw the accident.

He said: “It was so lucky that no one was killed at the pedestrian crossing, as it’s usually packed.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

The central Headington crossroads is very dangerous both for pedestrians and cars, and it is a mercy that no one was killed.

I happened to arrive on the scene while the ambulances, fire engines, and police cars were still present, and someone said that this car swerved to avoid a collision with another car, which looks likely.

In this case, of course, it may or may not have been the woman's fault: but if women in general are such bad drivers, why do insurance companies offer them better deals than men? The fact that some men like "Bill Bryson" think road traffic accidents are so trivial that they can joke about them may be part of the explanation.

Car hitting lamppost is the outcome not the cause.

Have other comments been removed? Some of the posts above suggest that they have.

Yes, Bill Bryson's stupid messages about women drivers have been removed.

The trouble is that it means that subsequent messages don't make sense.

Insurance companies give women better deals for the following reasons amongst others:
1. Women drive less miles than men.
2. Women drive less expensive cars than men.
3. Women drive more slowly than men.
4. Women are less likely to be professional drivers (trucks, buses, taxis, chaffeurs, pursuit drivers, rally drivers etc).
5. Women tend to avoid driving in the dark and in poor weather conditions.
6. Women tend to avoid back roads and lanes (where a lot of accidents occur).
7. Women tend not to do the driving when towing (i.e caravans, boats, gliders etc).
In my opinion the above reasons do not make women 'better' drivers than men, but they help explain why insurance companies operate as they do.
