TWO people were injured today when a car crashed into a lamppost.

The accident took place in Headington, Oxford, when a blue Nissan Micra swerved off the road, across a pedestrian crossing, and into the obstruction.

The driver, believed to be a middle-aged female, was taken to John Radcliffe Hospital after the crash on London Road, at the junction with Windmill Road. A bystander was also taken by the ambulance after being hit by debris.

The extent of their injuries was last night unknown, but witnesses said both had walked away from the crash.

Punters in Ladbrokes betting shop across the road heard the crash at 1.30pm.

Employee Fiona Molloy said the noise had been deafening.

She said: “It was loud enough for everyone to go silent in here and it’s a loud place to be.”

John Willoughby, 62, was also nearby. He said: “The driver was lucky to get out, but it was even more lucky that more people weren’t stood at the pedestrian crossing at the time.”

Danny Murphy, 41, who was carrying out roadworks, also saw the accident.

He said: “It was so lucky that no one was killed at the pedestrian crossing, as it’s usually packed.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
