Gipsy group aims to build settlement off A34

PLANS have been submitted for a gipsy settlement near the A34 north of Oxford.

The Romany Gypsy Advisory Group wants to create a site for eight mobile homes, eight touring caravans for nomadic use only and eight utility rooms for gypsy families on a piece of scrubland just off the A34 junction between Islip and Hampton Poyle.

Cherwell district councillor Simon Holland said: “It will be controversial and if necessary I will call it in so it can be properly reviewed in planning, where all parties can make their pitch.”

Hampton Gay and Poyle Parish Meeting chairman Dave Green said: “I want to know more about it.

“I will not oppose it on anything other than genuine planning grounds.”

“Obviously they have got to go somewhere.”

Cherwell said consultation would be open until April 16 and the application could be decided in April or May.

No-one from the Romany Gypsy Advisory Group was available for comment.

Oh yes, that's right, they're hated back at home, and this is the only country where they have rights.

Sorry but no.These people do not abide by our rules and thus we shouldn't be helping them. A huge amount of petty theft here in Radley is down to a certain protected group in Redbridge Hollow and the police just won't get involved.

Lord Palmerston says...

Gypsy is an Indian race which moved from India through Persia in the 10th Century A.D, ultimately arriving in Rome on their course through Western Europe , though a large concentration stayed in what is now Roumania. Tinker is a form of landless ethnic Irish who mainly came into Britain in the Industrial Revolution, seeking to benefit from the prosperity of working people in Yorkshire , Lancashire, Lanark and the Rhondda.. In fact coal boats from Barry to Dublin would take them back as ballast for next to nothing, whilst the aspiring Irish left for the United States, Canada and latterly Australia. I hope this helps.

J B Blackett says...

My Dad tells me that, when he was a lad , 'tinkers' used to call round the village and people knowing them as regular and trusted visitors would hand over various , usually cooking , tools and utensils to be mended.
.
The 'tinkers' would bring back the repaired items possibly in a day or two and get paid if the item looked OK.
.
Now where can you get that service nowadays ? Argos ? British Gas ? - I don't think so. Everything is made now to be quickly worn out and discarded.
.
Just like all the people involved - client and service provider. What a loss to us all.
.
Where did it all go wrong ? What are we doing ? Where's it all going to end ? What's it all about ? Why are we here ? Who made us ? Where am I ? Who are you ? Is there a life after death ? Is this it ? etc etc .
.
Regards
PS Illuminating treatise Lord Palmerston , although slightly misleading perhaps because of its necessary brevity.

Er, your rules? "These people" are residents like you and I.

"We shouldn't help them"? Are you a member of the Cherwell and District Council Planning Committee? Of course you aren't you're Hercule Poirot.

Maybe you should hand all that evidence of petty theft in Radley that you have unearthed to the police.

Travellers have been in Britain for over 600 years. They are a part of British tradition and culture.

We all have rights unless you are one of those supremacist type people? I know where my money would be.

I'm struggling with that assertion Mr. The. Where's your evidence? The tinkers come from what was then beyond the Pail-I din't think they'd have lasted long in medieval England . From memory the gipsies didn't reach Rome till after 1410 and would have been more of a 19th century phenomenon here

I don't mind helping travellers if they're genuine people living a simple life, but I can't think of a single travellers site that hasn't brought with it an influx in crime in the area.

From the communities.gov website.

Facts about Gypsies and Travellers
Myths, rumours and misinformation surround the presence of minority ethnic groups such as Gypsies and Travellers and these can be hard to rebut. However, below are some facts about Gypsies and Travellers that can be used to discredit many of the more popular myths.

Romany Gypsies have been in Great Britain for over 600 years, and Irish Travellers have also lived and travelled here for generations.

You do strike me as the sort of person that would help genuine simple living folk.

As for your second assertion, can you furnish us with any actual evidence of all these sites you've encountered and the relative crime figures?

Oh right, attached to the Catholic school. That just about says it all, tinkering around with kids, not to mention promoting the immunity thingy in africa, Strange that they don't go Travelling much over there, I wonder why that might be? Could it be that there are no state handouts over there, or that if you offered to pave somebodys driveway and after taking their cash did not do it, then you would be lynched? No human rights law to hide behind there eh.

this one's still alive is it?The zigeuner, zingari, call them what you will, may have been in Britain in one or two or three in medieval times, about the same numbers as Mongols, or Aztecs for all I know. But no,The Beeches isn't a medieval site. I think it was originally part of RAF Chipping Norton. And tinkers have been here "for generations". Indeed so, 5 or 6 generations since the mid 1800's-in Mountain Hare above Pentrebach, and Cwmcrachen where it is 15 years to a generation there'd have been many more generations. And your point, Mr. Youth, is?

I think the modern phrase is "Pikey" and you are right. most people do not like them. I wonder how many of our "you have to provide sites for them" MPs and councillers have these people living near them?

Every community has its share of trouble and trouble makers. I have been on the recieving end many times - and never a traveller in sight.
It would be unjust and stupid to decide we should forcibly deport or intern any community that has criminals in it - not unless you want to start with my own - "white british" - from which the majority of crime arises.
