Controlled parking zone one step away from approval

COUNCIL officers have recommended a proposed £297,000 controlled parking zone (CPZ) in the Magdalen Road area of East Oxford should go ahead, despite opposition from residents.

Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet member for transport, Rodney Rose, will decide whether to approve the residents’ parking scheme on Thursday. If passed, the restrictions will come into force in spring next year.

From November to January, the council sent questionnaires to all 1,726 homes in the Magdalen Road area, and 511 packs to every property in Iffley Fields, which will not now be included in the scheme.

The council received 565 responses.

In the proposed CPZ area of 25 roads, 61 per cent of respondents objected to the proposals and in Howard Street, on the edge of the proposed zone, 91 per cent objected.

In Iffley Fields, 54 per cent of respondents wanted their area excluded from the CPZ.

Consultation over the proposals has been going on for more than two years and campaigns have been organised on both sides of the debate.

Supporters of the scheme hope it will end parking problems and stop commuters leaving their vehicles in the road.

Head of transport Steve Howell wrote in the report: “Although the scheme is obviously controversial, officers consider that the benefits, in terms of the scheme’s overall objectives, would outweigh the ‘disbenefits’ raised by respondents.”

Cllr Rose said: “We don’t put in CPZs for the fun of it. If people want them we do a proper consultation and hopefully the majority will get what they asked for.”

Well if this statement is true and the above figures correct the scheme will be turned down. Where do you live Cllr Rose, I bet this would never happen in your neighbourhood, nor probably would you allow it.

297K would fill a lot of potholes, but of course this isn't about a public authority fulfilling its proper function, it's about control, what every little jumped up clerk ("manager") loves as much as his gold plated pension.

So all streets consulted have a majority vote NOT in favour, with up to 91% objecting, and yet they're still considering it?
This doesn't make sense, and seems as daft as the 20mph limit.

I agree entirely with Jamie Burns.

Councillor Rose lives in the Wychwood constituency, which is probably not very concerned about the city's traffic problems. I expect this hypocritical councillor and his buddies have free parking spaces outside their homes!

This load of inept County Councillors NEVER listens to its constituents. They should be kicked out at the next election.

The trouble with these controlled parking zones is that they stick ugly great signs at the end of every street, turning the place into an eyesore.

"If people want them we do a proper consultation and hopefully the majority will get what they asked for"... That's why gradually the whole of Oxford is getting it whether they want it or not. "We don’t put in CPZs for the fun of it"... No, you do it for the money, how stupid do you think we are. Please, will someone tell me how we can get rid of this dictatorial council.

Yet another tax for residents.

Vote them out. I am a Conservative and I think they're a disgrace. But then who to replace them? If we are grim, socialists and Liberals are grimmer and grimmest.
I suspect the only answer would be for it to be a criminal offence for any councillor at any level to be politically affiliated or in any way shape or form remunerated or reimbursed expenses. Not going to happen, sadly.

61% of those who responded objected, but as only 565 people responded out of 1726 people being asked you can hardly claim that the majority of people in the area oppose the scheme. By my maths it seems fewer than 350 people opposed it, despite the best efforts of a not-so-local barber!

That is not the trouble ISIS. The trouble is that you are being forced to pay for something that you do not get (a guarenteed parking space) and it is something that in the consultation a massive majority was against. But once again the council ignore the people who voted them in, and carry on with what they want to do. THAT IS THE PROBLEM. Get your head out of the sand.

That IS the problem for me. I like to live in a visually pleasing environment and I couldn't care less about the car-owners.

If you are unhappy with the CPZ signs, all that needs to be done is to remove them. Thereby giving free unrestricted parking to anyone. (Except for us residents that have already paid for permits)
This is what happened to the sign at the top of Walton Crescent which was removed in December 2009, and despite several reports to the council (city and council), nothing has been done, let alone replacing the sign.

Easier said than done. If I knew how to remove signs, I'd be out doing it every night till I'd cleared Oxford of all this eyesore clutter.

Pesonally I would cut down all those horrrible trees, and think of all the money it would save clearing up all those nasty leaves that they litter all over the place every year.

The trees are helping to offset the pollution from all the nasty cars that litter our streets, as well as making the place look nice. But you obviously have no sense of beauty!

I find this comment very interesting. When the county council decided to force through 20mph limit they held a very flawed consultation process, it was self selecting and there was no restriction on the number of times someone could voice their opinion. I wrote a letter to the council regarding their biased survey methods and was ignored.
Now the county council hold a less biased survey, it's a lot better than their previous survey, it does atleast ask everyone who will be affected although isn't perfect. This survey gives them an answer they don't like so they look like their about to steam roll over opposition.
What's even worse, is that I can't even vote out these corrupt/inept numpties because they are from different wards. Hudspeth, Rose and their ilk can continue to ruin Oxford with their ill thought out and dishonest policies and the people who are affected can do nothing about it.

quite right peter. i pay around £70 per year for the honour of parking in HE (headington east) and often never find a space. a big problem is all the multi dwellings as they allow 2-3 cars per household a permit but hardly anywhere has a driveway and there isnt enough space on the road for all the cars so somebody always loses out! in headington the problem is even worse because so many people chance their arm and park in a resident bay whilst they pop to a shop. i often wonder what they do with the money they get from the permits too, they dont employ the parking attendants directly.

1726 people had the chance to comment, fewer than 350 felt strongly enough to object. How is that a massive majority against? But hey, don't let the facts get in the way...

On average 61% of people who voted (responded) and 91% in Howard St were against the zone. In anybodys book I think that you will find that, that is a majority. in Fact out of 1726 people qusetioned only 220 people were in favour of the zone. A massive minority, but hey don't let the facts get in the way..
