Didcot and Abingdon to lose full-time firefighters

COUNTY bosses tonight approved controversial changes that will remove four full-time firefighters from Didcot and Abingdon.

Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet voted unanimously to relocate the firefighters to other stations, covering up shortfalls in crews firemen which leaves much of the county unprotected every week.

About 3,000 people, as well as Abingdon and Didcot town councils, objected to the proposals, following a Fire Brigades Union (FBU) campaign warning lives could be put at risk as a result of slower response times there.

Managers said based on the average time it takes for retained staff to get to the station, weekend response times to blazes would be three minutes three seconds longer in Abingdon, and three minutes 37 seconds longer in Didcot.

FBU chairman Steve Allen said during the 12-week public consultation there had been several incidents where members of the public could have died if fire engines had been delayed.

But deputy chief fire officer Dave Etheridge said moving the firefighters elsewhere in the county would cut by 15 per cent the 20,000 hours this year during which towns and villages in Oxfordshire had no local fire cover because of difficulties in recruiting retained firefighters.

He told councillors that yesterday, Bampton, Henley and Woodstock were all without local crews.

He said: “Those communities are at risk.”

Three minutes+ is an awful long time with flames licking at your feet.

I'm sorry but please don't take away crucial services like Fire and Ambulance.....why not start cracking down on other vital issues such as housing and work benefits! sort it out OCC!

The way this decision has been made is disgraceful.

The only publicity there was for the so-called 'consultation meeting' in Abingdon was organised by the firemen themselves.

If there are shortages in Bampton, Henley and Woodstock the County Council should emply extra full-timers to cover them, not take them away from Abingdon and Didcot.

I agree with you "Abingdon Neil". It seems the "difficulties in recruiting retained fire-fighters" for those areas is because OCC do not want to spend the money on them and would rather move much needed resources from other areas.

How about getting rid of the overpaid 'managers' at OCC? Surely that would be a better way to save money!

While I do agree with Dave (pictured) and I have known him some 20+ years I have to says that the removal of crew's is just moving the problem, so instead of other areas now having cover Abingdon & Didcot has part-time cover, which is not the answer.
The answer is to employee more people to service the communities that rely on them not reduce them. Additionally OCC are quick to state they want increases in the Council Tax to cover local services, well start delivering them then!
