A FAMILY fled their cottage as flames engulfed its thatched roof.
A woman and her three children evacuated their home in Netherton, near Fyfield, on Thursday at about 6.30pm.
It is thought a spark from a log burner caused the fire. No-one was hurt.
About 50 firefighters and eight fire engines spent three hours tackling the blaze.
Neighbour Paul Godden, 33, said: “I saw my neighbour waiting to flag down a fire engine and ran over. Four of us tried to keep the roof damp with hoses while the engines arrived.”
Abingdon Fire Station manager Graham Turner said his crew had been trained in dealing with thatch fires before Christmas.
