London commuters to face Thornhill parking charge

COMMUTERS using Thornhill park-and-ride to take buses to London, Heathrow and Gatwick could soon be charged.

Oxfordshire County Council is considering introducing a charge to pay for the rising costs of running the site after a 540-space expansion, estimated to cost between £3-4m.

The 850-space car park is often full to capacity by 9.30am most weekdays.

The council’s cabinet member for growth and infrastructure, Ian Hudspeth, said: “Thornhill is unique among Oxford’s park-and-ride sites in terms of the high demand for travel into London. While this has become an important feature of the site, our priority remains to protect core use for travel into Oxford.

“Introducing a small fee for motorists travelling to other destinations represents the most viable option.”

I wonder what he considers to be 'a small fee', because if it is to be a 'small fee' as is generally understood by the term, then it won't be viable to collect it.

Why the hell don't they just make it bigger. It is full by about 7.30am. Has no one at the OCC got any brains. The P&R is a really good service but it is half a service as you can ride buy cannot park.
Get real OCC.

If the "core use" is for travel into Oxford then why did they allow to have the bus stops for the buses going to London there?
I wonder also how will they control who parks to go to Oxford and who parks to go to London. That's going to be a tricky one!

You are quite obviously the one with no brains currymad. Either that or you simply cannot read. Didn't you see this part of the article? "after a 540-space expansion, estimated to cost between £3-4m". Or were you so busy with your predictable stampede to the 'moan about the council' trough that you missed it?

It is much safer to catch a bus to London in the P&R rather than stand on the main road. The buses are not the problem. Its the organisation. Yes, tricky who is going where, perhaps a red hat for London.....

does that mean you acknowledge you were criticising unfairly and hadn't read the piece properly? ie the park and ride IS being expande

Is there a waiting area at Thornhill for those drivers waiting for the London/Heathrow/Gatw
ick bus just because they're meeting someone? Or are they going to be charged too?

Has this 540 space extention actually been built yet, or is it about to be built?
The article doesn't make this clear.

So....make the London/Airport buses stop at other P&R sites to spread the load. You can see what's going to happen - people going to Oxford will get a ticket (or clamped?) by mistake and those going to London won't understand why they need a ticket but no-one else does.

It's yet another bonkers idea from OCC which will cost us all a load of money. Fare comment?

So much for encouraging use of public transport. Never mind that eh? Lets milk drivers for some more cash instead. Morons.

Bl**dy hypocrites !!!!
get out of your cars they preach, get onto buses they preach. Only make sure you do it before 9:30 because we can't provide any parking spaces for you after that. Oh and by the way we are going to charge you for doing what we told you to do.
I hate this stinking rotten city and it's stinking rotten administrators.

Before the County Council spends thousands on Consultants here’s the solution: Put barriers on the exits which are opened by inserting a token. All those that board a Bus for the City get given a token. Those going in the other direction don’t. Have a machine “selling” the token for those without to purchase......

People who share a car each take a token and sell spares at a discount on the black market...

Great idea, but at what cost? Those barriers cost a fortune, plus convincing all the bus companies to issue tokens... The parking charge for London bound people would be huge!

If a bus company, for example Stagecoach, funded a "parkway" car-park at Lewknor then it may mitigate demand at Thornhill. Oops, no. From memory they were refused planning permission...

It was finished a couple of years ago, you should venture out of your lovely hamlet of Little Rollright a wee bit more often, and see what happens in the big city x

Why would I use the Park and Ride when I lived in the city?

Why are you so rude and judgemental?

The extension hasn't been built yet, there was an article in the OM a few weeks back saying that it was being proposed. The Council did improve Thornhill and add a new building a few years back but the extension is something new.

I agree it is needed because Thornhill is full far too early but would rather it is paid for by those that use it than the taxpayer. I'm all for the idea as long as they can make it work.

A small charge to the bus companies for using this stop would be an easy way to raise some funds. The original idea for P&R was to relieve traffic problems in Oxford city.
I suspect the use of Thornhill for London commuters has far exceeded expectations.
