POLICE are investigating claims by an Israeli politician he suffered anti-Semitic abuse, while a pro-Palestinian demonstrator was injured in a collision with a ministerial car.

Protesters and members of the Oxford Union heckled Israeli deputy foreign minister Danny Ayalon.

Mr Ayalon had been invited to given an address and answer questions on the topic of “Hopes and Challenges for the Middle East”.

He has complained that a protester shouted “Itbah al-Yahud” – Arabic for “Slaughter the Jews” – at him.

Tonight police said they were investigating.

However a Pro-Palestinian protester, Anthony Inglis, 28, said he suffered injuries after a collision with a ministerial car in New Inn Hall Street as Mr Ayalon left.

Mr Inglis, of Bickerton Road in Headington, said he was forced to cling on to the bonnet of the car for about 100 yards before he fell off.

He said he suffered bruising.

During Monday’s Oxford Union event, one protester walked towards the minister carrying a flag and shouting: “You are a war criminal...you will be tried like Milosevic.”

An Oxford Union spokesman said one person had appeared to make a directly anti-Semitic remark while other members had continually interrupted Mr Ayalon’s speech.

He added: “Monday night was unprecedented.

“The Oxford Union will be apologising to Mr Ayalon.”

Mr Ayalon, a member of the right-wing nationalist party Yisrael Beitenu, said he had a moral duty to press charges.

He added: “This demonstrates our new policy on hatred and racism and we will have zero tolerance for anti-Semitism.”

Mr Inglis said he stood in the way an Israeli car to take a picture and he thought it would stop.

He added: “I was traumatised and left shaking after it happened.”

Det Chief Insp Colin Paine said he had seen CCTV footage of the incident and the driver would not be prosecuted for any motoring offence.

Asked if the driver had reported the collision immediately, he said not “initially”. Mr Paine said he would be looking into how quickly the driver had come forward.

He added: “A male protester moved in front of the car and appears to have made contact with it. The car was driving slowly and the man sustained minor bruising and grazes.

“We have also received an allegation of racial abuse.

“We take reports of this nature very seriously and are working closely with staff at the university to carry out a full and thorough investigation.”
