Veteran landlord dies of tumour

A long-standing pub landlord who was given a police bravery award has been remembered for his practical jokes and love of Oxford United.

Stuart Carter, who had owned the Quarry Gate in Headington for the last nine years, passed away on Monday, aged 50 after being diagnosed with a brain tumour just five weeks ago.

The Oxford United season-ticket holder had previously run the Duke of York in Oxpens Road, the Six Bells in Beaumont Road, Headington, and the Crown and Thistle in Old Road, Headington, with his wife Kim.

Mrs Carter said: “He knew a lot of Oxford fans from going to home and away games, so a lot of them would come into the pubs. He was always up to pranks – you never knew what he would do next.”

In 1992, Mr Carter was given a police bravery award for helping to stop a driver who had knocked down an officer and jumped two red lights.

He spent his final week in the Sobell House hospice in Headington. Mrs Carter said: “Five weeks before, he was told he had a brain tumour but he couldn’t have any treatment – there weren’t any options because it was a really aggressive form.”
