Public to get say on Oxford loo closures - but Price vows only 'two or three' will have to close

COUNCIL leaders today ordered a two-month consultation into plans to overhaul the provision of public loos in the city.

Eleven of Oxford’s 27 public loos are under threat of closure as part of plans to save £50,000 a year.

Facilities in Castle Street, Magdalen Street, St Giles, Woodstock Road, South Parade, Barns Road, Littlemore, Knights Road and Headington Hill are all in the firing line.

However, at a meeting of the council’s executive, council leader Bob Price said he only expected to have to close “two or three” toilets to make the necessary savings.

Mr Price said: “We’re trying to get as much feedback about what people think of the facilities.”

As part of its plan, the council is considering spending up to £500,000 upgrading facilities at Gloucester Green in the city centre and charging users between 20p and 50p.

It also wants to introduce a community toilet scheme – where local businesses open their toilets to the public – and carrying out minor refurbishments to a number of other facilities.

John Tanner, executive member for a cleaner, greener Oxford, said: “I think a comfortable, quality toilet at Gloucester Green, closing the Castle Street loo, introducing a community toilet scheme, and maybe charging for some toilets, makes sense.

A decision about which, if any, toilets will be closed is due to take place in September.

Closing the Castle Street loo?

Does that mean they'll be filling in the subway at County Hall? It certainly smells like a public lavatory...

Once again, I'd point out that during opening hours there are plenty of clean loos paid for by local taxpayers *inside* county hall, city hall, St Aldates, St Ebbes...

I'd challenge any city or county councillor to come up with a valid reason why the loos in these council owned/operated buildings should not be used by the general public...

Price and Tanner are so out of touch with reality on local matters. As is the 'Buffoon Broon' in Parliament on National Matters. Just think we are being told of an ageing population in this Country and all of the associated problems that old age brings, being 'taken short' and the lack of walking ability and they wish to have a 'super loo' in Gloucester Green and do away with one the other end of the City Centre. 'Community Loo's' (which are of course a way of the Council ducking their responsiblility to provide the necessary facilities) are available already, I know, as one who because of medical problems needs to know where they are off the Park & Ride in Magdalen Street East straight into Debenham's, Next Stop M & S on route to City Library where I am carrying out research. If I get taken Short whilst in there BHS next door (certainly not the disgusting Public Loo's in Castle Street). Before returning by the same route to the Park and Ride in Magdalen Street to Water Eaton where I know there are decent facilities there(County provided).
Of course yet another matter that is overlooked by them are the number of 'Tourists' who visit the City by Coach from London and who by the time they arrive here are in need of decent facilities. Yes by all means charge for the use of them but do make sure that they are of a fit standard with attendants (such as St Gile's Loo's used to have) that are becoming of a major tourist attraction in this Country.
