B4022 fatal: Death on road 'shows dangers'

A LANDLORD has called for more speed restrictions on the road outside his pub following the death of a motorcyclist.

Barry Shelton, landlord of The Bird in Hand, on the B4022 between Hailey and Finstock, spoke out after Robert Smith, 46, of Giernalls Road, in Hailey, near Witney, died when his motorcycle and an Audi A4 car collided on the same road on Monday afternoon.

Mr Shelton said: “Something needs to be done about the speed that drivers are coming along here. We need some signs putting up to slow drivers down. You do get cars whizzing along here and it can be very dangerous.

“I’m not trying to be a killjoy, but there are a lot of people that use this road, not just cars but cyclists, pedestrians and horseriders.”

Mr Smith suffered fractures to his arms and legs and was airlifted to the John Radcliffe Hospital, in Oxford, where he later died.

The B4022 along the stretch where Monday’s accident happened is a single carriageway road with a 60mph speed limit. There have been 41 accidents along the B4022 between Whitings Lane in, Hailey, and School Road, in Finstock, in the past 10 years, according to the county council.

A council spokesman said speed limits were constantly monitored.

The 58-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on bail.

One is told that speed cameras are used on roads where a high number of accidents take place and are not erected to raise money. Why then is there no camera on this stretch of road (41 accidents in 10 years) or on the stretch by Cokethorpe School. How many accidents has there been in ten years on Oxford Hill in Witney or in Bladon?

May I respectfully suggest that people accused of driving dangerously are probably somewhat unimpressed by council clerks putting up 10's of 1000's of little red signs? If the landlord of the Bird in Hand can drive this stretch of road competently so can anyone else...who wants to-signs do not alter the voluntary element.
But then we have a crazy control freak government and its nonsense is bound to have affected some citizens

Much of the hazard associated with this road near the Bird in Hand is due to motorists turning off to use a short cut through Crawley to avoid Witney.

More nanny-state control-freak restrictions are NOT the answer - the anti-speed lobby will latch on to one single fatal accident to perpetuate their absurd mantra. The problem is actually that people are so dulled into complacency by nuLabor's yellow jacket mentality that they are no longer alert enough to recognise potential road hazards.

This problem will not change until peoples attitude in general changes.Excessive speed is mainly due to folk not allowing enough time to do things.pressure of life to keep up with the jones's.the boss wanting more from his employees. It is greed that drives many along at break neck speed in everything, why cant folk just be contented with what they have, enjoy being alive

But your readers will be pleased to know that the County Council (sometimes it's so embarrassing to be a Conservative) is putting 30mph signs at Sarsden (permanent population about 25. Traffic flow about 18 vehicles per hour)
So that's all right then.

As a friend said to me, who'd come down for the week from Manchester, 'the traffic, it's management system and the roads round here are unbelieveable!'

It's the answer to all road safety problems, isn't it? Lower the limit. So how about looking at the facts?

"The man driving the Audi was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and was being interviewed by police tonight."

Dangerous driving - that's not something that's going to be fixed with the good old all-purpose, one-size fits all lower Oxfordshire limit.

I lose count of the number of accidents, many fatal, on this road. However this location and the Finstock crossroads are equally dangerous. Traffic lights at the crossroads with sensors (like the Tadpole Bridge ones) would slow traffic down. There are already signs by the BiH pub warning of the road ahead.

I don't feel that a plethora of signs; flashing lights and windmills is at all helpful, the ones by Cokethorpe are just too distracting. I was driving along there the other week and the Cokethorpe minibus pulled out of their drive way right in front of me! Did he look, if so he didn't care! Should know better!

As with Cokethorpe, a double white line, with proper enforcement, is far more desirable than yet MORE distractions in the form of signs and so-on. Speed may be an irrelevance, as I noted yesterday in Witney when four children ran straight across the road in front of me. Fortunately for them and me we were watching for stupid children and had stopped.
