Tesco plan set to be shelved

Plans for a third Tesco store in Oxford look set to be shelved after a wave of community opposition.

The supermarket giant submitted plans to build an Express store on the site of the boarded-up Friar pub in Marston Road.

However, more than 1,500 people have signed two petitions against the store amid fears it will lead to a surge in traffic, undercut traders and threaten the only post office in the area at the Costcutters store in Old Marston Road.

City council officers have recommended the plans are kicked out by councillors at Tuesday’s north east area committee meeting.

A report by planning officer Andrew Murdoch calls for store to be refused permission because it would generate too much traffic and be overbearing for the two neighbouring properties.

Croft Road resident and community campaigner Mick Haines, 68, said: “There’s a really strong feeling locally against this Tesco.

“The main concerns are the traffic and the fact the shop would be on a blind spot.

“We are also very worried a Tesco would put the small family businesses here out of business altogether.”

I have an idea - open a pub there!

The old pub failed for a reason. No point someone re-opening it only for it to close 6 months later.

I hate Tesco with a passion btw!

Mr Haines has also campaigned against a mobile phone mast and the closure of the subway. "Busybody" springs to mind, although I'm sure he doesn't mind the (over) exposure.

The pub failed because the brewery ran it into the ground. With the right person at the helm it should be a success.

Nor need it be the same old (standing at the bar and watching the footie on Sky) pub of course.

It could be combined with a cafe, a restaurant, and could be "diversified" to cater for more cosmopolitan tastes in the area now.

Or I read the other day about one Pubco/brewer's plan to create "youth pubs" in pubs that are not paying their way with the more traditional clientelle, offering only soft drinks and food, games and activities aimed specifically at creating a (for profit) commuity resource for 13-18 year olds.

Now that the brewery has got rid of it anyway, all these are more of a possibility for a sharp entrepreneur. Or even Tesco themselves!

Good to see it has been rejected by the area committee tonight though.
