Activists vow to fight on

Animal rights campaigners have vowed to fight on despite the imprisonment of the co-founder of their group.

On Friday, Mel Broughton, who 10 years ago set up animal rights campaign group SPEAC — which later became Speak, was found guilty of plotting arson attacks on Oxford University buildings.

The 48-year-old from Semilong Road, Northampton, was convicted of conspiracy to commit arson and was jailed for 10 years.

Last night, the campaign group that Broughton set up to oppose the building of the university’s £18m Biomedical Sciences Building, in South Parks Road, vowed to continue its non-violent campaign against animal experimentation.

A spokesman said: “Mel Broughton founded Speak and dedicated his life to working tirelessly for animal rights.

“We will be continuing our campaign in Oxford — and this has in no way affected it.

“While there are animals suffering in Oxford laboratories, Speak will be there.”

Broughton maintained he was only involved in non-violent protests, but was charged following the discovery of firebombs at Templeton College in February 2007 and an attack on The Queen’s College’s sports pavillion the previous November.

Oxford University’s Wayneflete Professor of Physiology, Colin Blakemore, a former chief executive of the Medical Research Council, said that he hoped Broughton’s conviction would act as a stark warning to those considering extreme activism.

Prof Blakemore said: “While he didn’t kill anybody, the burning down of a building is a potentially very serious offence.

“I have no problem with peaceful campaigning.

“That’s an absolute right, which I will defend to the hilt.

“But I hope there will never be another Mel Broughton.”

Prof Blakemore and his family suffered 15 years of terror at the hands of other animal rights extremists.

He said: “It was before Mel Broughton’s time.

“After they discovered my address, which it took them a couple of years to find, most of the activities were directed at my children.

“There were death threats, my children had to have police accompaniment everywhere they went and letter bombs were sent to my home.

“There were also lots of demonstrations outside my home, paint stripper was poured over my car and there were bricks thrown through my window.

“There was a very real fear for me and for my family.”

Despite efforts by campaigners to stop the use of animals in medical research, hundreds of mice were moved to the Biomedical Sciences Building in November last year.

Dr Evan Harris, the Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, who supported the university, said peaceful campaigning for a cause was entirely reasonable.

He added: “When Speak have persuaded enough MPs to ban the use of animals for food, which merely provides menu choice, then Parliament might ban the use of animals for saving human life.

“I don’t think banning either is desirable or likely but that’s the logical order and Speak are free to campaign peacefully for it.

“What is unacceptable is intimidation and harassment.”

The malevolent Broughton clones do indeed attack farmers and others involved in animal husbandry. Unfashionable word, evil, but that is the motivation for these retards, to use a more modern concept they are sadists.

Keep up the good work of your glorious leader Brougton. With a bit of luck you will all be locked up with him soon, and leave the rest of us in peace.

It seems that Dr Evan Harris MP is unaware of EDM 569 which "calls on the Government to initiate an unprecedented comparison of currently required animal tests with a set of human biology-based tests...to see which is the most effective means to predict the safety of medicines for patients.".

It seems he is also unaware of The Safety of Medicines (Evaluation) Bill 2009 which was launched by a cross-party group of MPs on 26 January, to "tackle the escalating problem of adverse drug reactions by requiring an unprecedented scientific comparison of testing methods.".

It would seem AR2048 has nothing better to do than write here banging on about animal welfare, so I shall continue to say your so very wrong. Both the welfare and testing using animals are checked on a very regular basis by the home office, its regulated very highly. Hopefully in time we will have solutions for Parkinsons and other neurological disorders which just today John Suchet the news reader has stated is possibly the worst thing that can happen to a human with regards to his wife's condition. AR2048, buck up your idea's and get with the real world, Speak are nothing more than urban terrorists.

If my daughter was ill, I'd have no problem in sacrificing a couple bunnies so she could live. Doesn't the bible say that man is here and should use the animals that were provided and eat of their flesh. Steak and chips tonight, yummy!

Yet we meet yet again so right back at ya :)

"I shall continue to say your so very wrong. Both the welfare and testing using animals are checked on a very regular basis by the home office, its regulated very highly."

That is absolutely NOT true - even ILLEGAL experiments on primates are ignored and covered-up - fotunately everyone can see for themselves at

"Hopefully in time we will have solutions for Parkinsons and other neurological disorders"

1) IF, as you claim, other species are sooo like humans results from them are valid for humans please will you tell us how, then, you can justify experimenting on them....come on, explain it to us.

2) We need scientific, human-relevant research, everyone can watch the ADI/NAVS video for examples of same.

"Which just today John Suchet the news reader has stated is possibly the worst thing that can happen to a human"

Yet 2000 years of experimenting on other species and STILL people are suffering from Parkingson's, Alzheimers, cancer, heart disease, CF, MS etc etc etc. Oh, and please will you tell us why you don't care about all the humans harmed and killed by 'animal-tested' drugs?

"AR2048, buck up your idea's and get with the real world,"

BigAlan, join us in the 21st century with current scientific knowledge and stop supporting killing some humans for the intended medical benefit of other humans,

"Speak are nothing more than urban terrorists."

That's rich coming from someone who fully supports extreme and lethal violence against millions upon millions of innocent and defenceless victims!

Please will you explain to us how in one breath you fully condone violence and in the next you condemn it?

Is violence ok if you don't care about the victims? Is violence ok if you might get something out of it? Do tell.

I have some shocking news for you...sorry to have to be the one to break it to you but it's important you know....brace yourself....

your daughter is NOT a big rabbit.....this is why humans need scientific, human-relevant research...

and also individually tailored medicines, because tiny genetic variations between humans mean a drug which helps another child could harm or even kill your child.

I hope you don't support killing some humans for the intended medical benefit of other humans, if you don't then you should support us, you can find out more info at

Beetle - Trying to save animals from being tortured is not what's sadistic, is it really?
Have you heard of curare? It can be used instead of anaesthetic and renders animals motionless for procedures but they can still feel everything! It's cheaper apparently.
The fact is, a lot of people speak against animal rights with hardly any knowledge of what is going on and that includes the futility of animal testing. If anyone wants to know exactly whats happening, there are plenty of exposures/informatio
n on the internet.

Bog Fox, It would be a lot more than a couple of bunnies and there's no guarantee they could save your daughter either, in fact they could cause her harm from serious adverse reactions.
Enjoy your harmful saturated fat, oh sorry I meant steak...

It's like this, Animals are bred to be eaten, tested on and used for work, oh and the occasional pet. I love all meat, drink milk and hopefully will live to a hundred years old with the help of drugs and die giving pleasure to a fit 21 year old girl. There, now lets carry on with our lives.

BigAlan says..."It's like this"

No it's not like that, of course some humans can and do behave as tyrannical despots towards those who have no way to defend themselves....just 'because we can' doesn't mean we should, does not make it morally right or in any way acceptable.

"and hopefully will live to a hundred years old"

Then remember that the victims on your plate had the survival instinct, struggled as they were killed, sought to preserve their own lives.

Their lives were their own - not yours to do with as you wish but THEIRS ....how strange that you seem proud to particpate in taking what is not yours, proud of stopping others from living THEIR time alive.
